Dual Plate Check Valve Selection Guide

Dual Plate Check Valve Selection Guide

4 Key Steps to Precision Sizing, Eliminating Water Hammer, and Preventing Leakage

Selecting the wrong check valve leads to more than just severe pressure drops—it can cause water hammer, disc chatter, and premature valve failure. With over 25 years of experience in fluid control, TVCCL has outlined the 4 essential steps for precise valve selection. Follow this guide to ensure your pipeline system receives the safest and most efficient protection.

Step 1: Identify the Media Characteristics

The fluid running through your pipeline dictates the lifespan of your valve. You must evaluate the fluid's corrosiveness, the presence of solid particles, and its toxicity.

  • General Water and Low-Corrosion Fluids: Standard Cast Iron CI or Carbon Steel WCB paired with stainless steel discs will easily meet your needs, offering excellent cost-efficiency.
  • Highly Corrosive Chemicals or High-Salinity Seawater: Material upgrades are highly recommended. For desalination or shipbuilding applications, TVCCL recommends Aluminum Bronze C95800 or Duplex Stainless Steel to effectively resist electrochemical corrosion from chloride ions.
  • Harsh Environments with Impurities or Slurry:

⚠️ Critical Recommendation: We highly discourage using Dual Plate Check Valves in these applications.

The presence of solid particles or slurry can easily clog the valve's internal springs and hinge mechanism, preventing the plates from closing fully or causing them to jam. This leads to severe backflow, seat erosion, and premature valve failure.

For media containing impurities or slurry-like conditions, we strongly recommend using a Knife Gate Valve instead. Designed for on-off isolation in demanding media, it provides reliable shut-off performance and is well-suited for handling thick or abrasive flow conditions where conventional check valve sealing would fail.

Step 2: Define Operating Pressure and Temperature Ratings

The extreme pressure and temperature of your system determine the required valve body class and seat material.

  • Pressure Class: Verify which pressure class under the ASME B16.34 specification your system requires, ranging from Class 150 to Class 2500. For high-pressure oil and gas pipelines, we offer thick-wall designs compliant with API 594 standards to ensure absolute pressure safety.
  • Seat Material Selection:
    • NBR and EPDM: Suitable for general water and low-to-medium temperatures ranging from 0°C to 80°C(NBR),-20°C to 120°C(EPDM)
    • Viton FKM: Ideal for high temperatures up to 180°C and offering excellent resistance to chemical solvents.
    • Metal-to-Metal Seal: For extreme high-temperature applications (such as steam systems), metal hard sealing must be selected to ensure no deformation or leakage under high temperatures.

Step 3: Confirm Installation Orientation and Space

The greatest advantage of a dual plate check valve is its compact, space-saving design. However, the installation orientation directly affects the operation of the springs.

  • Horizontal Installation: The most standard orientation, suitable for all conventional models.
  • Vertical Installation: Dual plate check valves are restricted to upward flow applications only. In this orientation, special engineering consideration must be given to spring torsion to overcome gravitational effects.
  • Piping Space: Our Wafer Type design saves up to a quarter of the space compared to traditional swing check valves. However, please ensure a straight pipe distance of 6 to 8 times the pipe diameter (6D-8D) is maintained upstream of the valve to prevent disc chatter caused by fluid turbulence.

Step 4: Select the Valve Body Design

To meet various industrial safety requirements, TVCCL offers two core design types:

  • Standard Retainer Type: Suitable for general water treatment and non-toxic fluids, serving as the most cost-effective standard configuration.
  • Retainerless Type TC8 Series (Highly Recommended): Specifically designed for oil, natural gas, or toxic chemical fluids. The retainerless design eliminates retainer pin penetrations through the valve body, completely eradicating the risk of fugitive emissions to the atmosphere and ensuring 100% compliance with the strictest environmental and workplace safety standards.
